McCoy Creek Trail Gravel Pt 2 of 2
Pt. 2 of 2 McCoy’s Creek Trail Gravel Side of the Park
Stay clean and dry on uncrowded Asphalt tarmac and pressed gravel E-Biking the McCoy’s Creek Trail in Buchanan, MI Buchanan has a hidden gem for hiking and biking. It hems the southern skirt of the city. This park is available dawn dusk and not crowded in the after work hours. The entrance is a bit discreet and there is no second way out
There is a mural of the park map and some history to go with your exercise. McCoy’s Creek Trail Enter at W Smith Street, just West of S Oak Street. The park is narrowly fit between the Amtrak rails and pristine marshland habitat. The trail loops at the end, passing below an elevated observation deck. That would be useful if there as to be an E-bike race, You can really get some nice photos up there.
A third of the McCoy’s Creek Trails is paved tarmac.
It’s in excellent condition after construction a couple years ago.
They did a great job of mixing sand clay and gravel to provide a solid riding base for trail, commute or MTB tires. I especially like the persistent grass growing on the shoulders and margins. It will only stay nice if we responsibly keep it that way. A level and sustainable park for walking, bicycling, and e-Biking alike. There you can follow a West Loop, a Central Loop and a Big Bypass trail that winds around wildly through the trees.
I did most of my E-Bike riding with the power level set to 2 out of 3. At that setting power is applied by the brushless hub motor as long as I pedal it at a certain minimum cadence.
This power shuts off when I stop riding above cadence or touch the brakes. I estimate a max speed on flat ground of 8 mph. Acceleration is 3mph per second. That speed is as fast as I would pedal for these conditions. The only change is in the acceleration. I also did some racing speed, full throttle vs power level 3 of 3. For a 350W E-Bike a top speed of 18 mph is usual.
I like how the surface firmness did not kick up much dust at all. Video 2 of 2 shows how the trails can be used for e-bike racing or for mid power mixed hiker and biker traffic.
Video One – Riding the E-Bike at various power levels on the smooth new tarmac. That was where I encountered a deer.
Video Two – Riding the curvier gravel that makes up 2/3 of the park. Pressed down solid so that I had no worries about loose stones or dust. I felt perfectly safe and satisfied with the gravel portion of my trip. A deer felt safe around me too, see it at the end.
McCoy Creek Trail Tarmac Pt. 1 of 2 of this low cost e-bike with 350 Watt rear hub dive has power and discipline.
I recorded this video with a handlebar phone mount.
