Speak Up for Safer Streets

If you have ever wondered why your local streets prioritize cars over safe bike lanes, crosswalks or family-friendly traffic speeds, it is likely due to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

Last updated more than a decade ago, this document sets the standards for traffic design and safety in your community. The MUTCD is a little-known federal regulation riddled with harmful obstacles to building safer streets. Unfortunately, even well-meaning engineers are sometimes hesitant to go against its recommendations.

Right now, you have a unique opportunity to speak up in support of better and safer biking. Join us in asking the Federal Highway Administration to reframe and revise the MUTCD so that our streets no longer leave bike riders, motorists and pedestrians to navigate incomplete connections that force everyone into unsafe and confusing situations.

Quality bike infrastructure helps us move forward together by relieving traffic congestion, increasing mobility and opportunity and making our cities more connected and livable. Our leaders need a Manual that gives them the proper tools to deliver on this promise.
